"Engaging communities in the planning process is a vital element in successfully delivering new developments. Partners are effectively our in-house communication team and they do a great job."

The Brief

We worked with leading Yorkshire property development company S Harrison Group for over two decades. As marketing communications consultants part of our remit was to support their development proposals through the planning process.

In York, Harrison had completed two major student accommodation schemes and is working on more.  We were tasked in each case with staging the public consultation as part of the planning applications.

The Campaign

Working with the developer, architect, planning officers and the end user - York St John University - we mounted a strong and integrated communications programme. Using web, direct marketing and traditional media promotion techniques centred around a public exhibition, we presented the potentially controversial schemes in a positive light.

Feedback from the process was incorporated into the statement of community involvement which formed an integral part of the successful planning submission for both schemes to date.

The Results

Both schemes gained planning approval and have won praise from neighbours for the way in which they actively encouraged engagement between students and the community, which has involved a real renaissance for the area.

One scheme involved a change of use of the land site, and since the schemes have been built they have been shortlisted for national and regional awards. At Partners’ suggestion, other student/community events have been staged as part of the community integration process.
